Have you heard of a Doula but wondered what they were and what they did. Well, here are the facts.
What is a Doula?
A Doula is a professional who provides emotional, physical, informational and practical support to the expectant, labouring or post natal mum. A doula does not perform any medical tasks but actually compliments the medical staff.
The word 'Doula' comes from the Greek and is loosely translated as 'woman servant.' There are three types of Doula: (1) Antenatal, (2) Birth and (3) Postnatal. While some Doulas only specialise in one area, the majority offer all three services.
Antenatal Doula
An antenatal Doula provides both emotional and practical support for the pregnant woman. This may be by doing light housework, running errands and caring for older siblings. They also provide lists of local resources, practise relaxation techniques and massage.
Birth Doula
A birth Doula helps a the mother cope with the labour pains and helps her have a pleasant birth experience, whether the mother wants to give birth naturally, with medication or is planning a c-section.
The birth Doula meets the mother before the birth to discuss her expectations and her options for birth. The doula can also help write the birth plan.
The Doula helps the mother to relax and feel confident and assist with labouring and pushing positions. They also help the father participate in the birth to the extent that he feels comfortable.
Postnatal Doula
A postnatal Doula supports a new mum and family after the birth. This could be by doing light housework, cooking, demonstrating new-born baby care (for example, bathing and helping with breastfeeding) The doula may watch the baby while the new mum rests or has a bath.
Why choose a Doula?
Doulas have a love for new motherhood and a desire to make pregnancy and childbirth the celebratory experience it is meant to be.
How do you find a Doula?
Maternal Instincts Doulas is an agency run by Hannah Cavanagh. Hannah offers experienced doulas (for antenatal, birth and postnatal)in London.
All the Doulas are police checked and come with references. An interview is carried out by the mum-to-be before any Doula is hired, to make sure both mum and Doula are compatible and comfortable.
Both antenatal and postnatal Doulas charge an hourly rate where as a birth doula charges a one off fee.
